What is an FCI
Dutch Shepherd?

We are happy you would like to learn more about our beautiful and intelligent dogs and why we chose FCI as our standard in our breeding program. FCI insures that your Dutch Shepherd is a 100% purebred Dutchie!

Breed Standards

The Dutch Shepherd is a versatile and intelligent breed, recognized by both the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) and involved in the Koninklijke Nederlandse Politiehond Vereniging (KNPV) programs. However, there are notable differences between the FCI Dutch Shepherds and those bred and trained under the KNPV criteria.

While both FCI and KNPV Dutch Shepherds share a common ancestry and many characteristics, the primary difference lies in the breeding and training objectives—FCI focuses on purebred breeding standards and versatility, while KNPV prioritizes working ability and performance in security-related tasks.

  • Breed Standards & Recognition
FCI Dutch Shepherds: Recognized by the FCI, these dogs adhere to strict breed standards that cover aspects such as size, color and temperament. The FCI standard specifies that the Dutch Shepherd should have a well-proportioned build and can have one of three different coat types: short hair, long hair, or rough hair. They are known for their brindle coloring, which is the only accepted color in the breed standard. KNPV Dutch Shepherds: While many KNPV dogs are Dutch Shepherds, the KNPV is not a breed registry but rather a training program for police and service dogs. Dogs in the KNPV program are selected based on performance rather than adherence to specific breed standards. This means that while they may resemble Dutch Shepherds, they can include crossbreeds and may not meet FCI standards.
  • Training & Purpose
FCI Dutch Shepherds: These dogs are bred for a variety of purposes including companionship, show, and agility. Their training is often versatile but adheres to the principles suitable for family life and competitive sports within breed-specific competitions. KNPV Dutch Shepherds: KNPV training focuses heavily on skills needed for police, military, and security work. This includes tracking, obedience, protection, and scent work. KNPV dogs are often trained to a higher intensity and with a strong focus on practical working abilities rather than conforming to breed-specific show qualities.
  • Temperament & Behavior
FCI Dutch Shepherds: The breed standard emphasizes a dog that is intelligent, reliable, and has a balanced temperament, suitable for family life and as a working dog. They are known for their loyalty and trainability. KNPV Dutch Shepherds: Dogs trained under the KNPV program are selected for their drive, courage, and ability to perform under stressful conditions. They may be more intense and assertive, given their training for active duty roles in demanding environments.
  • Physical Characteristics
FCI Dutch Shepherds: There is a strict adherence to physical characteristics, including size, weight, and color. Deviations from the breed standard can disqualify a dog from showing. KNPV Dutch Shepherds: These dogs are typically bred for function over form, meaning that physical characteristics can vary more widely. The emphasis is on health, strength, and capability rather than specific physical traits.
