The OSS Puppy-to-Partner Journey
Why Training With Your Breeder Matters
If you're on the OSS puppy list, you've probably spent a lot of time thinking about your future Dutch Shepherd.
You've thought about the puppy.
You've thought about the name.
You've looked at pictures.
You've imagined bringing that puppy home.
But there is something I want every current and future OSS owner to understand:
The day you pick up your puppy isn't the end of the process. It's the beginning of your partnership.
When you choose to have your FCI Dutch Shepherd trained through Our Shepherds Shepherds (OSS), my goal isn't simply to send you home with a puppy that knows commands.
My goal is to help create a puppy that is prepared for its next chapterāand an owner who is prepared to take over the leash.
Because I don't just train your Dutch Shepherd. I teach you how to operate your Dutch Shepherd.
š WHY I START WITH FOUNDATION WORK
Every puppy is an individual.
Some mature faster than others.
Some are more confident.
Some are more sensitive.
Some are naturally more driven.
And some are little furry land sharks who believe your fingers, shoelaces, and pant legs were personally created for them to bite.
That's why I don't believe in rushing puppies through a checklist simply so I can say, "Your puppy knows X number of commands."
I want the foundation to come first.
Depending on the puppy's age and development, we begin working on things such as:
Engagement
Confidence
Communication
Puppy manners
Crate training
Potty-training foundations
Appropriate boundaries
Impulse control
Environmental exposure
Basic obedience
Redirecting unwanted behaviors
One of the first things I often work through is the puppy's nipping and teething stage.
Dutch Shepherd puppies can be incredibly mouthy.
That's normal puppy development, but we still need to teach them what is appropriate and give them the right outlets.
The goal isn't to suppress the puppy's personality.
It's to teach the puppy how to live successfully with humans.
šÆ FROM FOUNDATION TO OBEDIENCE
Once the foundation is established and the puppy is developmentally ready, we gradually move into obedience.
Depending on the individual dog and the training program, that may include:

But obedience isn't just about teaching a dog words.
It's about creating communication between dog and handler.
I want your puppy to learn that listening to its handler is rewarding.
I want your puppy to learn how to focus.
I want your puppy to learn how to make good choices.
And I want your puppy to understand that its handler provides direction, structure, and clarity.
Because eventually...
I'm handing that responsibility to YOU.
ā¤ļø WILL MY PUPPY BOND WITH YOU INSTEAD OF ME?
This is one of the questions I understand completely.
When you leave your puppy with someone else for training, it is natural to wonder:
"Will my puppy become attached to the trainer?"
My answer is:
Your puppy will trust meābut I'm not trying to make your puppy my dog.
While your puppy is in my care, I provide everything that puppy needs.
I care for them.
I show them affection.
I build trust.
I give them structure.
I work with them.
I make training a positive experience.
But I am intentional about leaving the primary owner-bonding process open for you.
Your puppy needs to be able to trust the person training it.
At the same time, I don't want to create an unhealthy dependence on me.
Your puppy is going home to YOU.
I want your puppy to be ready to transfer that relationship into your home, your routine, and your hands.
š± YOU ARE PART OF YOUR PUPPY'S TRAININGāEVEN FROM HOME
I know that many of my OSS owners don't live close enough to simply drop by and watch training.
That's why I work to keep owners involved remotely.
Throughout the training process, I can provide:

š» FaceTime and Zoom opportunities
I want you to see your puppy learning.
I want you to see the progress.
I want you to see the personality developing.
And when appropriate, FaceTime or Zoom gives us an opportunity to begin involving you in the training process.
You can watch.
You can ask questions.
You can learn how I communicate with your puppy.
And you can begin preparing for the day you're holding the leash.
Your puppy may be at OSS, but you're still part of the journey.
š¤ THE OSS HANDLER TRANSFER
Then comes one of my favorite parts of the entire process.
Pickup.
But I don't look at pickup as simply:
"Here's your puppy. Have a safe trip home."
Your puppy has been learning.
Now you need to learn.
That's why I encourage owners to allow plenty of time for the OSS Handler Transfer.
This is where I teach you how to operate your Dutch Shepherd.
We'll go over what your puppy has learned and how to maintain it.
You'll learn:
The commands your puppy knows
How those commands are given
How to reinforce behaviors
How to communicate clearly
How to build engagement
How to maintain boundaries
How to continue the training
How to create structure at home
How to strengthen your bond
How to recognize your dog's communication
I don't want you to leave with a trained dog and a manual.
I want you to leave with hands-on knowledge and confidence.
š” IF YOU CAN STAY, I ENCOURAGE YOU TO
If you're traveling to OSS to pick up your puppy and you're able to stay locally for a little while, I encourage you to consider giving yourself additional time for the transition.
A few hours can make a difference.
A day can make an even bigger difference.
And if you can stay a couple of days, you have an opportunity to begin the transition while I'm still available to help.
You can take your puppy with you at night.
You begin learning the puppy's routine.
You begin handling.
You begin working commands.
You begin learning how your puppy settles.
You begin the bonding process.
And if you have a question...
I'm still right there.
That can make a huge difference in confidence.
Instead of getting back on the road thinking:
"I hope I remember everything."
you can leave thinking:
"I know my dog. I know what we've learned. I know what I'm doing."
ā¤ļø THE BONDING PROCESS REALLY BEGINS WITH YOU
There is something special about the moment a puppy transitions from trainer to owner.
Your puppy begins learning:
Your voice.
Your scent.
Your routine.
Your expectations.
Your praise.
Your communication.
And as you continue working together, that relationship grows.
I've had dogs in longer-term trainingāincluding service-dog developmentāthat still formed incredibly strong bonds with their owners.
Training doesn't have to take away from your relationship.
When training is done thoughtfully, it can actually give you the tools to build a stronger relationship because you understand how to communicate with your dog.
š THEN YOU GO HOME TOGETHER
Eventually, the training facility becomes your puppy's past and your home becomes its new world.
There will be new smells.
New sounds.
New routines.
New environments.
New expectations.
And probably a few moments where you look at your Dutch Shepherd and wonder:
"What have I gotten myself into?"
Don't worry.
You're not the first person to have that thought.

That's part of raising a working breed.
But you won't be starting from zero.
Your puppy will have a foundation.
You'll have learned the training system.
You'll understand the commands.
You'll understand the routines.
And most importantly...
You'll know how to communicate with your dog.
š² THE OSS RELATIONSHIP DOESN'T END AT PICKUP
One of the things I want my owners to know is that going home doesn't mean you're on your own.
Your puppy is going to continue changing.
Your Dutch Shepherd will mature.
You may encounter new behaviors.
You may decide you want to advance your dog's obedience.
You may want to explore scent work.
You may eventually have completely different goals than you had when you first joined the puppy list.
That's why continued OSS training is available.
š» REMOTE TRAINING WITH OSS
If you live far away, we can continue working together remotely through FaceTime or Zoom.
This can be especially helpful because I can actually see what you and your dog are doing.
You can show me what's happening.
I can watch your handling.
I can watch your dog's response.
And we can work through problems together.
Remote training can be used for things such as:
Obedience maintenance
Puppy manners
Engagement
Recall
Place
Heel
Leash work
Impulse control
Crate routines
Household boundaries
Handler communication
Troubleshooting
Bonding
Continued development
You don't have to live close to OSS to keep learning from OSS.
AND IF YOU WANT TO COME BACK?
We can continue your dog's development through additional in-person training as appropriate.
Maybe you want to advance obedience.
Maybe you want to develop scent work.
Maybe you're interested in a specialized working program.
Maybe your goals have changed as your dog has matured.
That's okay.
Your Dutch Shepherd doesn't have to stop learning simply because puppy training is finished.
WHY THIS MATTERS TO ME
My approach to training has been shaped by experience.
I've worked with extremely high-drive and challenging Dutch Shepherds, including my experience with Kairos, a three-year-old KNPV Dutch Shepherd who was exceptionally high drive and challenging.
That experience taught me a tremendous amount.
When I began developing my FCI Dutch Shepherds, I wanted to approach things differently.
I wanted to pour into these dogs in positive ways.
I wanted to build confidence.
I wanted to create engagement.
I wanted to provide structure.
I wanted to develop obedience.
But I also wanted to create a better transition for the people who would eventually take these dogs home.
I don't want my owners to be intimidated by their Dutch Shepherd.
I want them to understand their dog.
I want them to have confidence.
I want them to know what to do when something doesn't go according to plan.
And I want them to enjoy the incredible relationship that comes from working with a Dutch Shepherd.
THE OSS PHILOSOPHY
I don't measure the success of training by how beautifully your dog performs for me.
I measure it by what happens when the dog goes home.
Can you communicate?
Can you maintain the training?
Does your dog understand you?
Do you understand your dog?
Can you continue developing the behaviors we've established?
Are you building trust?
Are you enjoying one another?
That's what matters.
